Celtic supporters have got their hopes up after a report claimed Benitez would be their next manager

It’s the story that’s got some Celtic fans in a state of feverish anticipation, while others digest it with a pinch of salt.
The Mirror reported on Saturday night that Rafa Benitez was set to replace Neil Lennon as the club’s manager, with the former Liverpool and Newcastle United boss having recently left Chinese Super League side Dalian Professional.
They claim that Benitez is is “set to become Celtic’s new manager” and that “His sudden availability means Celtic have a world-class replacement for Lennon.”

Cold water has since been poured over the story by Spanish football expert Gulliem Balague, who tweeted: “Rafa Benitez to Celtic? There was interest in him but not an option today.
“He’s going to rest for a bit, despite offers (from Germany, also a national side…).
“By the way, about Celtic: there is a false document doing the rounds (check the phone number).”

Kris Boyd is rarely slow to get a dig in when it comes to Celtic, and the former Rangers striker expressed his amusement at the Benitez link on social media.
In an Instagram Story posted on Sunday, Boyd shared a picture of two-time Wimbledon champion Rafa Nadal, accompanied by the caption: “More chance of seeing this Rafa in Scotland.”
