Rangers legend Stuart McCall has made a return to football seven months after leaving Bradford City – joining Blackpool as assistant head coach in a move he has called “special.”
McCall’s dad played for the Seasiders alongside true icons like Stanley Matthews and Stan Mortensen and the Rangers legend can’t wait to get started alongside manager Neil Critchley.
McCall has had stints as coach or manager with Motherwell, Rangers, Scotland, Sheffield United and Bradford (three times) and joins Blackpool ahead of the new season to replace Colin Calderwood.
“To be joining Blackpool is special,” McCall told Blackpool’s website.
” My sister was born in Blackpool and my dad played with the likes of Stanley Matthews and Stan Mortensen. He always told some good stories about his time there.
“I’m really excited for the challenge and to become part of the team. The Club and in particular the coaching staff did an outstanding job last season – I obviously know Steve Banks well – and I now want to come in and be a key part of the group as well. I’m here to support Neil in the best way I can.”
Despite his legendary status at Bradford, McCall’s third spell at the Valley Parade helm came to an end in December when he was sacked with the Bantams 22nd in League Two.
Blackpool were due to face Rangers last night in a pre-season friendly at Bloomfield Road but a Covid outbreak in the Seasiders’ squad forced it to be cancelled.
