Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side were outplayed by Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic on Sunday.

Rangers legend Lee McCulloch spoke exclusively to the Glasgow Evening Times, and admitted that there is still a huge gulf in class between his former club and Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side, both on and off the pitch.

The Hoops were too good for the Gers at Parkhead on Sunday, and eventually ran out comfortable 1-0 winners, although they should really have won by a far greater margin.

Steven Gerrard brought in a whole host of new signings this summer, in an effort to close the gap on Rodgers’ men, but it is clearly evident that the former England and Liverpool skipper still has a lot of work to do.

McCulloch highlighted that there is still a huge gulf in class between Rangers and Celtic, when speaking exclusively to the Glasgow Evening Times, suggesting that the two clubs’ respective budgets proves how much ground his former club needs to make up:

“Qualification to the Europa League group stages was always the top priority for this part of the season. We have better players, a better mentality, and a better manager, so there is a lot to be happy about. What can’t be denied though from watching the match against Celtic is that there is still a gulf that is all too apparent. Odsonne Edouard cost them £9million, and they have just sold another striker in Moussa Dembele for £20million, so it isn’t a level playing field when it comes to finances, and therefore when it comes to the talent that is on the pitch. We can’t forget that we were watching two teams competing on Sunday with vastly different budgets.”

Rangers now sit four points adrift of Celtic, and a further three behind league leaders Hearts, so they will need to put a good run together when they return to action after the international break, if they are to keep in touch with the top of the table.
