The Rangers legend has described what it’s like to play against Celtic as the sides prepare to face each other in the Scottish Premiership.
Former Rangers midfielder Brian Laudrup has given his insight into what it’s like to play in one of football’s fiercest rivalries – the Old Firm derby.
Laudrup spent four seasons at Ibrox and was part of a hugely successful Gers side that won nine consecutive league titles between 1989 and 1997.
Since then the tables have drastically turned in favour of the Hoops, who are now looking for their sixth consecutive league title while newly promoted Rangers look to usurp them.
And in the buildup to Saturday’s landmark clash at Parkhead, the 47-year-old Dane told the Daily Record: “As soon as you join one of these clubs, from the very first minutes you are told about this game.”
“To play in one was terrifying. It was a bit scary but on the other hand it’s tremendous to be involved in one of the world’s biggest derbies.”
It will be the first time the teams have met in the Scottish top flight since Rangers’ liquidation in 2012 – and while Celtic fans will no doubt insist it is the only the first league meeting between the sides due to their rival’s new corporate identity – Laudrup still believes the eagerly awaited match is something the players of both teams will always remember.
“For these players it’s tremendous,” he continued. “They have read about the derby and heard about it from those who have played in the game but to actually be part of it is completely different. It’s something they will never forget.”
