Rangers will play Danish side FC Midtjylland in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League should they overcome Progres Niederkorn.

Steven Gerrard’s side play the Luxembourg minnows on Thursday at Ibrox hoping to build a commanding first leg lead before heading on their travels a week later.

The Gers famously lost to Progres during Pedro Caixinha’s reign as manager, a defeat that the Portuguese never really ever recovered from.

Concentration will be key despite Gerrard’s team looking far stronger and more unified than anything Caixinha managed to field.

Midtjylland finished second in the Danish top-flight last term, failing to defend their Superliga crown. They did however win the national cup competition.

They haven’t featured in the group stages of the competition since 2015 and last year were knocked out of qualifying by Malmo of Sweden.

Featuring a familiar old foe in former Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko, they’ll likely pose the stiffest challenge of the summer so far should the Gers progress to meet them.

Gerrard’s team have looked slick and confident in the early summer matches but will know better than anyone there’s lots of work to be done before thinking about an extended run in Europe.

Last term’s trip to the group stages was a real highlight of the club’s season and it’s something they’ll be keen to replicate. The best way to do that is to focus on one match at a time.
