Rangers Academy winger Josh McPake has lauded Nathan Patterson as an ‘inspiration’ to the other youngsters at the club after breaking into Steven Gerrard’s first-team at Ibrox – and confessed it is “great” to see one of his mates make the step up.
McPake has been impressing out on loan at Harrogate Town and is set to appear at Wembley on Monday in the FA Trophy final.
While Patterson’s season has already come to an end, McPake has been impressed with what he’s seen from his former Academy team-mate when he’s filled in for James Tavernier.
“Nathan has had a brilliant season. When Tav got injured he came into the team and started a few games and he has looked really good,” McPake told Rangers TV
“Tav’s goals and assist are incredible and Nathan can learn from him too. When he has played, even in the recent Old Firm game at Ibrox, he looked the part and I am so pleased for him.
“It is always great to see Academy players getting a chance in the first team. I, and other players at the club, can take inspiration from Nathan and what he has achieved. It is great to see one of your mates, and a player who I have played with since I joined Rangers, working hard, progressing so well and now being a full-time member of the first-team squad.”
With reports linking the Gers with a move for Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence, it’ll be interesting to see whether the Gers look to let Patterson head out on loan next season.

Tavernier has just signed a new deal at the club so it seems very unlikely he’d be sold meaning any move for Spence would see Rangers over-loaded with right-backs.
