Glasgow Rangers academy duo Stephen Kelly and Cammy Palmer have temporarily swapped Ibrox and Steven Gerrard for the Scottish second tier.
Glasgow Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has given his thoughts on the news that Ibrox academy stars Stephen Kelly and Cammy Palmer have gone out on loan, tipping the duo to come back better from the experience (Glasgow Evening Times).
Stephen Kelly has made the temporary switch from Rangers to Scottish Championship side Ayr United for the 2019-20 campaign, while Palmer, who captained last season’s Reserve League winning side, links up with Partick Thistle – also in Scotland’s second tier – until January.
Both players recently signed new deals at Ibrox which commit their futures to the Gers until the summer of 2021, and both are highly rated 19-year-old midfielders, but with Steven Gerrard putting together a squad intending to challenge for silverware this season, there may not have been too much game time for either just yet given the high stakes.
“Hopefully you will see them back and even better in the future,” Johnstone wrote in the Glasgow Evening Times. “Kelly impressed boss Ian McCall during a friendly with Ayr United the other day… and Palmer has joined Partick Thistle on a similar deal until the end of the season after catching Gary Caldwell’s eye during the same game that saw Rangers run out 6-1 winners as some fringe players got game time.
“A number of the ones that played don’t have any future with Rangers. But Kelly and Palmer now have a chance to go and prove themselves in the Championship and to raise their games again.”
Rangers have had a busy transfer window so far with the likes of Steven Davis, Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie, Greg Stewart, George Edmundson, Sheyi Ojo and Joe Aribo all coming on board at Ibrox ahead of a campaign in which a return to silverware and glory seems closer than ever before.
