The evergreen hitman has been a revelation since joining Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers.

Jermain Defoe has shed light on a chance encounter with club legend Graeme Souness shortly before signing for Rangers in January.

The red-hot hitman joined the Gers on an 18-month loan from Bournemouth in the Premier League earlier this year.

And the 37-year-old striker is on record as saying this month that he wants a permanent deal at Rangers [Sky Sports] after finding the net with a ruthless regularity in the Premiership.

Defoe has scored nine goals in 353 minutes of league football for the light Blues this season – including two hat-tricks – and it’s safe to say that the Ibrox faithful adore him.

The former England international knew what he was signing up for after bumping into Souness on his flight to Glasgow, with the legendary Scot highly recommended life at Ibrox.

He said on talkSPORT [14/10/2019]: “It’s funny because before I signed I spoke to Graeme Souness and we spoke about the Old Firm and Rangers and this was before there was any contact and he said it was the best game in the world.

“I bumped into him again when I was on the flight up to sign and he said ‘if you go there and do it right then trust me, you will love it’.”

Surely the Rangers faithful would love him to stay in the long term – or until he hangs up those flaming boots of his.

But it depends on whether it’s feasible for Steven Gerrard and the board, considering Defoe is on a £65,000-a-week deal with the Cherries [Spotrac].

A wage cut might be required, but if Defoe is enjoying his football – and winning things – then he might well take the plunge.
