Rangers captain James Tavernier thinks Sunday’s Old Firm clash with Celtic is the “perfect” game for the Gers to get over the disappointments of the last seven days – and insists he can’t wait for it.
After losing to St. Johnstone in the Scottish Cup, the Gers’ hopes of a league and cup double vanished and Tavernier is adamant that he and his team-mates are raring to go.
The skipper insists the players are going into every game looking to win and thinks that has come from “years together” and the newer faces in the squad buying into what Steven Gerrard demands.
“As a Rangers player you always want to go in and win, that is obviously our objective this weekend. That’s what is required and the standards we have set ourselves,” Tavernier said, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account.
“The mentality comes from the years together and the additions we have added. Hard work, sticking to what the gaffer wants us to do and being fully focused. The boys are all raring to go for Sunday.
“It is a perfect game after last week. I can’t wait.”
Tavernier recently returned to the starting line-up after a spell on the sidelines – but the Gers still remain short on bodies in defence ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm.
Injuries have ruled Niko Katic, Fil Helander and Leon Balogun out while Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey are suspended, leaving only Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Jack Simpson and Borna Barisic as senior options.
Rangers will also be without Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack as the Light Blues aim to see out the final three games without defeat and ending a top-flight season unbeaten for the first time since 1899.
