Rangers are closing in on a deal to bring New York City FC star James Sands to Ibrox, with the midfielder set to arrive in Glasgow very soon.

The Scottish Sun claim that the deal for Rangers to sign Sands has now been completed.

That will see Sands join Rangers on an 18-month loan deal with the option of a permanent stay at Ibrox.

It’s added that Sands is now expected to arrive in Scotland within the next 48 hours as he puts the finishing touches to his move.

The Glasgow Times add that Rangers have fended off major interest from European clubs to secure Sands.

Those clubs may be from the Bundesliga, with The Athletic claiming ‘several’ German clubs wanted Sands.

Sands, 21, is a versatile performer who can feature at centre back, right back or in holding midfield.

Despite the sale of Nathan Patterson to Everton, it’s understood that Sands won’t be playing at right back.

Instead, Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be using Sands as a midfield player, most likely in front of the Rangers back four.

Sands has racked up 69 first-team appearances for New York City FC and just helped them win the MLS Cup.

Sands will now follow in the footsteps of Carlos Bocanegra, DaMarcus Beasley, Claudio Reyna, Maurice Edu, Alejandro Bedoya, Gedion Zelalem, Emerson Hyndman and Matt Polster in Rangers’ American ranks over the years.
