Jak Alnwick doesn’t look like getting a chance at Ibrox unless Wes Foderingham swaps Rangers for a reunion with Mark Warburton at Nottingham Forest.

It was almost inevitable that Mark Warburton would consider bringing Mark Foderingham to Nottingham Forest this summer.

The Championship side are desperately in need of a new goalkeeper with the unconvincing Vladimir Stojkovic set to leave and Stephen Henderson struggling with injuries. And Warburton knows Foderingham well, the goalkeeper joining Rangers on his watch in 2015 and immediately becoming the club’s undisputed first-choice.

Therefore, reports in the Scottish Sun that Forest have made Foderingham their top goalkeeping target come as little surprise. Although, understandably, Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha would be loath to lose the former Swindon Town stopper and would demand a hefty transfer fee.

Readymade replacement?

Yet, if there’s one person at Rangers who could see some positivity in one of the club’s key players departing this summer, its Jak Alnwick. After all, it’s fair to say the former Newcastle United academy graduate is yet to make an impression north of the border.

Since moving from League One Port Vale in the January transfer window, the 24-year-old has featured just once, the final day victory at St Johnstone.

And, for all his talent, Alnwick appears unlikely to wrestle away the first-team spot as long as Foderingham remains at Ibrox, although the latter did make a number of high-profile errors last season and divided the fanbase for long spells of the campaign.

Yet, Foderingham moving to Forest would hand Alnwick his long-awaited opportunity to prove his worth. Excellent at Port Vale in the first few months of the season, the Hexam-born ‘keeper arrived at Ibrox in the form of his life.

And Foderingham’s departure would surely be a watershed moment in his short Rangers career.
