Paul Lambert has suggested that Steven Gerrard moving from Rangers to Aston Villa would be a ‘stepping stone’, as he told Sky Sports News (09/11/21 at 9:10 am).
The former Aston Villa boss did, however, make it clear that Rangers is a ‘huge’ club, but the Premier League is ‘stronger’ than the Scottish Premiership.
Villa sacked Dean Smith on Sunday and they are now on the lookout for a new face to take to their dugout.
After winning the Premiership title with the Gers last season, Gerrard has seen his name linked to the vacant role in the Midlands.
Lambert knows exactly what it’s like standing in the Villa Park dugout, as he shared his thoughts on those Gerrard rumours.
“If you don’t know Scottish football, Rangers and Celtic are massive,” said Lambert. “They are absolutely huge.
“I have always said it, if they went down to England and you have them the same resources with what everybody else has got, they would be huge in it because of the size of the club and the fan bases they have got.
“It’s whether he wants to come back to England. No disrespect to the Scottish league, but the Premier League is a stronger league. That’s probably the only thing he will need to weigh up.
“The size of the clubs, Rangers is huge – Steven going in after Jurgen would be a massive tough ask to go into, so maybe Aston Villa might be the stepping stone for him and if he goes to Aston Villa and does really well.”

There’s no doubt that Gerrard would want to manage in the Premier League one day, but is the time now right for him to leave Ibrox? Probably not.
He has only won one Premiership title and still has plenty more to add.
The other stumbling block would be trying to lure Gerrard out of the club midway through the season.
Unless Rangers give the Englishman their blessing, and there’s no reason why they should, he’s not the type to leave during the season and leave the club in such a difficult position.
