HITC Sport has used Football Manager 2017 to look at what Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers’ XI may look like in 2022.
As Rangers continue their preparations for the new season, Gers fans may be wondering how long it will take them to properly challenge Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
To help provide a better answer, HITC Sport has used Football Manager 2017 to try and take a glimpse at how the future may look for the Ibrox side – and unfortunately for the Light Blues, it is fairly grim reading even in the year 2022.
Alan Pardew is now in charge, but he has been unable to stop the run that has seen Celtic win the league title in every season from 2016/17 to 2021/22.
But what does the team starting the 2022/23 campaign look like on the game? Here is what HITC Sport found…
GK: Wes Foderingham
Wes Foderingham remains the side’s number one by the time the 2022/23 season rolls around – and he has been in good form over the past few years.
Rangers’ Wes Foderingham
RB: James Tavernier
Like Foderingham, James Tavernier remains with the Gers in 2022. Unlike the stopper however, his recent form has been nothing to shout about.
CB: Bruno Ecuele Manga
By 2022, 34-year-old Bruno Ecuele Manga has left Cardiff City and has arrived at Rangers on a free transfer from Toulouse during the most recent summer window.
Rangers’ Danny Wilson (R)
CB: Danny Wilson
Despite being injured for the entire 2021/22 season, Danny Wilson – who, of course, is on Rangers’ books in reality – is still a key defender for the Gers.
LB: Kyle Gallacher
Kyle Gallacher is the only re-gen in the Gers squad. The 18-year-old has been capped by Scotland and is being chased by Premier League side Bournemouth.
Mark Noble
DM: Mark Noble
Mark Noble remained with West Ham until 2021, joining Rangers on a free – get used to reading that phrase. He has been excellent for the Gers despite being 35.
CM: James McArthur
Signed on a free in 2020, James McArthur is now 34-years-old and remains an important part of the narrow Light Blues midfield.
James McArthur
CM: Richie Towell
Along with Tavernier, Richie Towell is one of only two players to cost any money having signed for £400,000 from St Johnstone. He has probably had a hard time winning the fans over, having spent around five years with Celtic.
CM: John Fleck
10 years after his real-life departure, John Fleck is back at Rangers having spent much of his career in League One.
ST: Alex Jakubiak
Unsurprisingly, Alex Jakubiak was signed on a free from Watford 2020. He has scored 27 goals in 62 games for the Gers.
ST: Jai Quintongo
Like his strike-partner, Jai Quintongo cost nothing, arriving on a free in 2017 from Morton. His record is extremely underwhelming, having not scored more than 10 goals in a single campaign.
