Rangers and Scotland legend Barry Ferguson thinks Scotland boss Steve Clarke should give Billy Gilmour his chance to shine when the Scots kick off their Euro 2020 campaign on Monday – and insists the 20-year-old is going to be a “huge star” in the future.
Gilmour is one of several options Clarke has in midfield but Ferguson thinks the ex-Rangers youngster can pick up where he left off for Chelsea and catch the eye at Euro 2020.
While Ferguson expects Scott McTominay and John McGinn to take up two of the three midfield berths, the iconic Rangers hero thinks Gilmour should be given the nod to take the third.
Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor is the most likely option too start, with Ferguson confessing he struggled between the Parkhead man and Gilmour before finally opting for Gilmour after a “lot of consideration.”
“There are so many options but two of the three are certainties. Scott McTominay and John McGinn will be crucial,” Ferguson told the Daily Record.
“McTominay has developed into a top-class footballer and oozes class and confidence. McGinn is a player I love watching for club and country. He’s a stand-out for Aston Villa and when he’s let off the leash to support Scotland’s front men he’s a huge part of our attacking armoury.
“The third player gave me my biggest dilemma because it’s so difficult to choose between Callum McGregor and Billy Gilmour. I’ve been a huge admirer of Callum for a long time. I think he’s a terrific midfielder and if he plays, great.
“But I love watching Billy Gilmour do his thing. He is going to be a huge star in the game, make no mistake.
“The way he demands the ball and makes things happen, his ability to take it in tight spaces and just the absolute belief he has in his own ability. After a lot of consideration, I’m going for the Chelsea kid.”
Will Gilmour start Scotland’s Euro 2020 campaign?
The Chelsea midfielder has all the talent to go on and be one of the best players ever to come out of Scotland.

While some may feel his lack of experience should count against him, the 20-year-old has enough ability to make up for that and become the breakout star of the competition.
