Rangers icon Barry Ferguson has insisted winning promotion to the SPFL with Kelty Hearts is “up there with everything” he’s achieved in his career and admits it will live with him “forever.”
Ferguson’s Kelty beat Brechin City 3-1 on aggregate to make up for the disappointment of 12 months ago when the SPFL scrapped the Playoffs as a result of Covid.
The Fifers will now take their place in League Two for next season and the former Rangers captain was absolutely delighted at the final whistle.
“It’s amazing. What an achievement,” Ferguson told the Daily Record.
“A lot of people were surprised I took this job 33 months ago but I knew if I was given the tools to make a go of it.
“This is up there with everything I’ve done in football, 100 per cent. It’s got to be.
“I know people will say ‘is he having a laugh?’ But the amount of work the players and I have put in to get here, it’s a brilliant achievement. They are a brilliant group and nobody can deny we deserve to be an SPFL club.
“This will live with me forever.”
Ferguson is assited at Kelty by another former Rangers player, Bob Malcolm, and it will be interesting to see whether their links to Ibrox sees the Gers send any of their youngsters to Fife.
The Gers have made no secret of their preference to get their best young talents playing first-team football so Kelty could be the ideal stop for them.
With Cove Rangers and Edinburgh City both winning promotion to the SPFL in recent years and both impressing, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Kelty continue their rise through the leagues in the coming seasons.
