Rangers legend Barry Ferguson has given his verdict on the Gers’ signing of John Lundstram from Sheffield United on a Bosman – and thinks the Gers have landed the “bargain of the summer.”
The midfielder became the Gers’ third signing of the summer when he was unveiled earlier this week, joining the Light Blues after his Bramall Lane contract had come to an end.
Ferguson has watched the Blades closely as he tracks the progress of John Fleck and has regularly been impressed with Lundstram’s performances in the middle of the park for Sheffield United.
That’s left the Rangers legend “really excited” to see the Liverpool-born star arrive at Ibrox and Fergusom thinks he would have cost the Light Blues millions had he not been out of contract.
“Believe me when I say, this is a proper football player they’ve just got their hands on and it shows that Gerrard is not allowing anyone at the club to take their eye off the ball,” Ferguson told the Daily Record.
“I’ve watched a lot of Sheffield United over the last couple of years because I’m a huge fan of John Fleck and I’ve made a point of watching his career develop ever since he moved down south.
“So I’ve also seen a lot of Lundstram and, given what I’ve seen of this guy, I have to admit to being very excited about his arrival at Ibrox.
“This is a tried and tested Premier League player. A modern-day, box to box midfield man who has a bit of everything in his locker. He’s physical and enjoys the rough and tumble but he uses the ball superbly well and offers a threat in front of goal.
“Put it this way, he would have commanded a very hefty fee if he was still under contract so it looks very much to me as if Rangers have landed the bargain of the summer already.”
Rangers fans will be hoping to see Lundstram in action tomorrow
Gerrard’s side head to face Tranmere tomorrow in a pre-season friendly and Gers fans will be hoping Lundstram is given his first minutes in a Rangers shirt.

His arrival will really increase the competitin for places in midfield and should push the likes of Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack and Steven Davis on to perform even better.
After Gerrard promised to bring in quality rather than quantity this season, there can’t be many Rangers fans unhappy with the signings so far.
