Moravcik is not as impressed as others by Steven Gerrard’s men

Unbeaten in all competitions. Through to the Europa League round of 32 after topping their group. 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership.

In the eyes of most observers it has been a superb start to the season for Rangers, but not everyone believes the hype. A comfortable 2-0 away win over Celtic in September pointed to a gap in quality between Steven Gerrard’s men and their rivals. Parkhead legend Lubomir Moravcik, however, is not sold.

Moravcik, who famously scored twice against Rangers in his first Old Firm derby, has compared the current crop of Ibrox stars unfavourably with the side assembled by Dick Advocaat in the late ’90s.

With the next meeting of the sides less than three weeks away, the former Czechoslovakia and Slovakia international has had his say on the league leaders.

Speaking in Record Sport, he said: “Last time I saw Rangers play in Europe I didn’t think they were a top team.

“Okay, they are a team in top form. They win their league games easily, they qualify for the knockout rounds of the Europa League.

“But in my time they had (Lorenzo) Amoruso, (Giovanni) van Bronckhorst, a lot of good Dutch players, Jorg Albertz.

“Rangers is similar to Celtic at the moment, but they are in better form.”

Gerrard’s side took 14 points from 18 in Group D of the Europa League, winning all four matches against Standard Liege and Lech Poznan as well as drawing twice against favourites Benfica.
