Glasgow Rangers had been linked with making a move for the 25-year-old.

Rangers’ hopes of landing Brentford midfielder Jota during the January transfer window have been dashed after the 25-year-old featured in the Bees’ FA Cup third round tie.

According to the Daily Record, Gers boss Mark Warburton was weighing up a swoop for the playmaker who he managed during his time in charge of the Championship club.

However, Rangers’ chances of bringing him to Ibrox on loan are over as his substitute appearance against Eastleigh in the 5-1 win meant that the Spaniard has now played for two teams already this term – having previously completed an underwhelming loan spell at Eibar – and is therefore barred from playing for another side during the current campaign due to FIFA regulations (via Record).

While Warburton may have still held out some hope before the weekend of bringing Jota to the Scottish Premiership, it certainly appears that he was prepared to miss out on the player as the Record reports that Rangers are closing in on a move for Bournemouth’s Emerson Hyndman and are also looking at another player Warburton managed at Griffin Park, Arsenal’s Jon Toral.

But if Jota enjoys a promising second-half of the season, then perhaps the Light Blues may decide to reignite their interest in the summer when they will possibly be able to use the prospect of European football as a way to lure him to the club.
