If you believe the ongoing reports, Rangers are looking for a big-name successor to Pedro Caixinha following the Portuguese’s Ibrox exit. However the Gers hierarchy have the ideal candidate already at the club, if only they were brave enough to give him the job full-time.

Graeme Murty may not be the headline name some at Rangers are craving, but he clearly understands the club and, most importantly, he has the respect of the players, who showed their willingness to perform for him in the recent victories against Hearts and Partick Thistle.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Bringing in another foreign manager or a British boss with more front-line experience than Murty is not necessarily the right way to go, with Rangers’ current crop playing for the caretaker boss in a way they n ever managed under Caixinha.

Jason Holt is the perfect example; a player who looked dead and buried not long ago but delivered one of his best performances in a Rangers shirt last weekend.

Murty is not afraid to dump the deadwood and put some of Caixinha’s expensive summer signings on the bench, and he was reaping the rewards prior to the international break.

There would be no risk appointing the 42-year-old on a short-term contract until the end of the season and then potentially extending it if all goes to plan.

When you consider his relationship with Rangers’ next generation are the sheer number of quality teenager coming through the ranks right now, it could be the decision that defines a new legacy.
