Mark Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers side have often struggled since their return to the Scottish Premiership.

Derek Johnstone has predicted how many players Rangers will sign and let go of during the January transfer window if Mark Warburton is given money to spend, the Evening Times reports.

The Gers have found life difficult back in the Scottish Premiership. While they are now second following their emphatic victory against Kilmarnock, they have struggled to find anything like the kind of form that inspired them to the second tier title last season.

After 10 games, they had scored just 12 goals – 19 fewer than leaders Celtic had after the same number of games – and had won on just four occasions. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that some Light Blues supporters are looking to January as a key month for their season.

And Johnstone has predicted what that month could look like if Warburton is given the opportunity to bring some new faces in.

“Mark will know his budget and I am sure he will be pleased if he gets a few quid to go into the market with,” he told the Evening Times.

“If he does, you might find that there are two or three that leave during the transfer window. There are some that are on the periphery of the team so you might see two or three going out as well as two or three coming in.”

While the January window is not the ideal time to make significant changes to a squad, it would appear that it could prove hugely important to Rangers’ season.

If they can make some strong additions to the squad, while also removing the players that have struggled to adapt to life at the highest level, then they will surely improve their chances of earning a place in Europe next season.

And if they can do that, that will surely make their life much easier in the summer as the prospect of playing continental football may help them entice some of their previously-sceptical targets to Ibrox.
