The former Rangers striker later returned to Ibrox as both assistant manager and manager – the position now occupied by Steven Gerrard.

The former Rangers striker Ally McCoist volunteered praise for Celtic and one of their players while co-hosting Alan Brazil’s Talksport breakfast show on Friday.
McCoist, who was also assistant manager and manager at Rangers, revealed he will be at Celtic’s game against Hamilton on Saturday.
The Bhoys go into the game top of the Scottish Premiership standings, two points and as many places clear of Steven Gerrad’s Ibrox outfit.
And McCoist expressed concern at Celtic’s recent good run, before singling out the Parkhead midfielder Ryan Christie in particular.
“They’ve reached a little bit of form, which is concerning me a bit. In the internationals, do you know who we haven’t mentioned? He’s actually having a great wee period just now – not just James Forrest – it’s the boy Ryan Christie,” said the Rangers hero.
“I like Christie – he made the second goal for Forrest in midweek (Scotland’s 3-2 win against Israel). Great awareness, he just gambled – kind of old school midfield run beyond the centre forward. (Steven) Fletcher flicked it on and he had the awareness and vision to square it to Forrest.”
But asked by Brazil if comments show that he is “a wee bit worried” about next month’s Old Firm encounter at Rangers’ Ibrox home, McCoist replied: “Let’s not get carried away. Calm down – I’ve just got to call it as I see it.”
Celtic have won seven successive Premiership titles – two short of the record set by themselves and Rangers – although Gers fans will argue that four of those arrived during their side’s four-year top-flight exile.
Is this Rangers’ best chance to end Celtic’s title-winning run?
