Glasgow Rangers defender Bruno Alves’ former teammate for club and country is available, so should the Ibrox side act?
One of the smartest deals that Pedro Caixinha pulled off during the summer was the move that saw Bruno Alves move to Rangers from Cagliari.
Alves may be in the twilight of his career, but he is clearly still good enough to perform at an extremely high level and has the experience that will only benefit the likes of Fabio Cardoso and Ross McCrorie as they continue their developments.
So perhaps Caixinha should look at that deal and see if he can replicate it by bringing in one of Alves’ former teammates for both club and country.
At 34, Meireles’ best years may be behind him but there is no question that he would certainly bring something to the Scottish Premiership side if they decided to pursue a deal and managed to bring him to Ibrox.
The former Liverpool and Chelsea man – who played alongside Alves for Fener, as well as for the Portugal national team – could be an extremely valuable squad player for Caixinha, both in terms of bringing quality to the side but also in helping bring some of the younger players on.
And with Meireles a free agent, a deal may not hurt the Gers’ transfer budget too significantly, so the amount of risk involved in a deal would be significantly reduced.
The likes of Alves and Meireles – if Rangers did join the hunt and did win the race – may not be the long-term answer at Ibrox, but those kind of players will undoubtedly ensure that the long-term picture at Rangers can be a lot brighter.
