Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has admitted that Scott Wright “probably deserved to start” yesterday’s 3-0 win over Livingston and believes the wideman took his chance by scoring the Gers‘ second goal of the afternoon.
Wright started on the bench but came on with half an hour played after Ianis Hagi limped off, pushing the former Aberdeen man right into contention for Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier with Malmo.
With four games in 10 days, Gerrard had one eye on upcoming fixtures with his selection yesterday and hopes Wright can consistently get his name among the goalscorers this season.
“Scott probably deserved to start the game,” Gerrard told Sky Sports, “but we’ve got four games in 10 days.
“Unfortunately he came on for Ianis Hagi but we’re hoping he’ll pull through and be okay.
“But Scott took his chance. I thought he came on, he was direct, quick and fast.
“He scored a wonderful goal and that’s the part of his game we’re on his case for, we want him to get numbers in his game and be a killer in the box.”
Suspension to Kemar Roofe and Hagi’s injury leaves Gerrard a little bit lighter on right-sided attackers than he’d like for the Malmo clash.
The return of Alfredo Morelos should ease it a little and possibly see Fashion Sakala pushed out right but there’s a real case for Wright to start in Sweden.
Completing his move from Aberdeen six months early has really helped the winger settle and he should really benefit him in the long-term and let him push for a regular starting place this season.
