The Glasgow Rangers ace, currently on loan away from Ibrox, impressed in the Euro 2021 qualifying win over San Marino in Paisley.
Glasgow Rangers youngster Glenn Middleton has received praise by Scotland Under-21 boss Scot Gemmill after the Ibrox prodigy shrugged off a missed gilt-edged opportunity to eventually get himself on the scoresheet against their San Marino counterparts (Glasgow Evening Times).
The Scots got their Euro 2021 qualifying campaign off to a winning start as they claimed a 2-0 victory in Paisley, Alessandro Tosi putting through his own net to give the hosts the lead on 21 minutes.
Although Middleton – on loan from Rangers at Hibernian (BBC Sport) – spurned a great opportunity from close range shortly after the opener, he went on to claim the second on 28 minutes, pouncing on a loose ball to give Scotland a two-goal lead that they would not relinquish.
The 19-year-old Ibrox man is traditionally a winger but he started up front in the absence of injured Everton striker Fraser Hornby, who picked up a knock last week after joining up with Belgian outfit KV Kortrijk on loan.
“I know Glenn can play through the middle having worked with him before,” Gemmill is quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times as saying. “Out of possession he will run all day and I wanted to put their goalie under pressure, with everybody up alongside him and I thought he did that well.
“I know he’s not happy that he didn’t score the chance just before his goal but he has got that goal hunger and is desperate to score. Yeah, he missed one chance but it’s not going to stop him trying to take others. It would have been great to score more goals but in terms of a team performance I thought it was strong.”
Up next for Scotland U21s is Tuesday’s trip to Croatia as they seek to make it two wins out of two in Euro 2021 qualifying group 4.
