Darren Moore could get the best out of Glenn Middleton at Doncaster Rovers – is he better off leaving Scottish Premiership giants Rangers on loan?

With just a few weeks until the 2019/20 season kicks off, we are nowhere nearer to finding out where Glenn Middleton will be playing his football.

The former Norwich City winger made a real impression at Rangers during the previous campaign, scoring and assisting 10 goals in 29 games and he looked set to kick on again under Steven Gerrard.

But that was before Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie and Sheyi Ojo all arrived at Ibrox. And with The Gers still keen to bring Ryan Kent back to Glasgow from Liverpool, it’s fair to say Middleton is unlikely to make anywhere close to 29 first-team appearances if he stays in Scotland.

The 19-year-old was linked with Doncaster Rovers earlier in the summer, via the Daily Record, but the move appears to have stalled after a change in management at the Yorkshire outfit. So Middleton is now stuck in limbo with his route to the Rangers’ starting XI seemingly blocked by an array of new additions.

The teenager has been included in the starting XI for Tuesday’s U23 clash against Cambridge United but a season of reserve team football will hardly help his development after a year in which he proved himself to be more than ready to make an impact at senior level.

But a potential loan move to Doncaster shouldn’t be considered dead in the water. In former West Brom boss Moore, Rovers have a manager who loves working with young players and immediately won over The Baggies fans with an attractive, attack-minded style of football that should suit Middleton down to the ground.

If anything, Doncaster looks like an even better destination now than it did a few weeks ago.
