Rangers appear to be targeting Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their new boss, just weeks after he wanted to become Newcastle United manager.

Rangers lost Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa last week, and now need to bring a new manager to Ibrox.

A number of names have been linked, but there appears to be one clear favourite for the job – Van Bronckhorst.

The Dutchman has held talks over a move to Ibrox having travelled to Glasgow over the weekend.

Van Bronckhorst, 46, spent three years with Rangers as a player and now looks set to return.

A former title winner as manager of Feyenoord, Van Bronckhorst has also won two domestic cups and managed in the Europa League and Champions League with Feyneoord.

To put it simply, Van Bronckhorst just seems to tick all the right boxes for Rangers.

Rangers fans have been clamouring for Van Bronckhorst in recent days, but he put himself in contention for another job last month.

The Chronicle reported that Van Bronckhorst had shown a real interest in becoming Newcastle United boss.

Van Bronckhorst missed out on the Newcastle role in the end, with Eddie Howe being appointed as Steve Bruce’s successor.

The timing for Rangers seems to be perfect. Van Bronckhorst could have been unavailable just a matter of weeks ago, but Newcastle looked elsewhere.

Now needing a new manager, Rangers have Van Bronckhorst right in their laps.

There’s also an argument to be made that Van Bronckhorst may actually treasure this job even more.

He has an emotional connection with Rangers from his playing days and will be desperate to bring them success as a manager.

Sure, Newcastle have riches to play with, but that personal link for Van Bronckhorst may mean this Ibrox role means the world to him as a move back to Rangers seemingly draws closer.
