Rangers legend Barry Ferguson thinks Steven Gerrard could throw an Old Firm selection curveball and name Scott Wright in his starting XI for Sunday’s Ibrox clash with Celtic.

The former Aberdeen winger has made an steady start to his Ibrox career since moving to Rangers in the January window and Ferguson thinks the absence of Scott Arfield will see Joe Aribo deployed in a deeper role, allowing Wright to start.

While Gerrard could opt to go with Ianis Hagi or Kemar Roofe on the right of his front three, Ferguson believes Wright could be the one asked the link up with Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to sink the Parkhead side.

“Gerrard may have a couple of difficult decisions to make especially if Scott Arfield isn’t passed fit as I’m sure his name would be one of the first on the team sheet,” Ferguson told the Daily Record.

“That would allow Joe Aribo to start in a more attacking role on the right-hand side, where he did so much damage to Celtic last time. But if he has to make a change to the personnel then it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest to see Scott Wright coming into the team ahead of the likes of Kemar Roofe and Ianis Hagi.

“He’s got plenty of very good attacking options – and Roofe and Hagi have proved their worth over the campaign. But Wright has looked really lively every time he’s been given an opportunity.

“He’s shown he wants to take on responsibility and make a real difference. That’s what pulling on a Rangers shirt is all about. You need a big heart and a strong chin to wear it properly.

“And that’s exactly what I expect to see from every single one of them this weekend.”

Wright has made ten appearances for Rangers, scoring once and chipping in with a couple of assists, since his move from Pittodrie.

The 24-year-old hasn’t really had a chance to show what he can do in a big game yet and the opportunity to impress against Celtic is one he will surely relish.
