Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has pleaded with the Scottish Government to “show a bit of heart” over the expected gathering of thousands of Gers fans this weekend to celebrate the club’s record 55th title win after they were warned to stay away from Saturday’s trophy presentation at Ibrox.
Gers fans will descend on Glasgow en-masse as Gerrard’s side are presented the Scottish Premiership trophy after the clash with Aberdeen, with fans’ group the Union Bears organising a march from the stadium to George Square in the City centre afterwards.
Gerrard admitted that he understands the feelings of supporters – throwing in a line from an Ibrox chant for good measure – as he implored fans to stay safe.
“You’ve got to understand where the fans are. They adore this club, they adore the players,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.
“They’ve followed near and far, they’ve followed through thick and thin. They’ve been on the floor and they’ve paid extremely big levels of money, even when they can’t get in the ground to see a glimmer of the pitch or a glimmer of the players.
“So I totally understand how they’re feeling and how excited they are but for me as manager of the club, I have send a message that they need to remain safe and listen to the rules that are in place.
“But I also think people in higher places have got to show a bit of heart and understand that common sense will hopefully prevail.”
The Light Blues sit 90 minutes away from finishing the league campaign unbeaten as Gerrard’s side rack up the records and Gers fans would no doubt love to see their heroes end the season as invincibles.
While fans of other clubs in Scotland have gathered to celebrate their side’s success without as much as an eyebrow being raised, Rangers fans must be wondering why the are the focus of such attention.
