Glasgow Rangers were linked with trying to bring the midfielder to Ibrox on a pre-contract deal back in January.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard looks on during the Ladbrokes Premiership match between Hibernian and Rangers at Easter Road on March 08, 2019 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

While Rangers’ loss of form has left Steven Gerrard with a mountain to climb if he wants to win silverware in his first season at the helm at Ibrox, it has also helped make it abundantly clear how much work needs to be done to the squad over the summer.

It has become increasingly difficult to argue with the suggestion that the Gers are over-reliant on Alfredo Morelos for goals and moments of creativity, particularly when the chips are down.

And while there may be more pressing concerns to address – such as the potential lack of centre-backs for next season – Gerrard simply has to be prioritising signing a new attacking option who can make an impact in the middle of the park but can also link up with Morelos.

And Rangers have perhaps already been linked with the perfect target.

The Sun reported in January that the Gers were rivalling Celtic for the signature of Nick Powell, who is available on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Powell has been excellent in the Championship with Wigan Athletic, scoring six goals and providing six assists. He bagged 15 league strikes last term as he inspired their promotion bid out of the third tier.

It should surprise no-one if the 24-year-old is receiving offers from Premier League clubs this summer. But Rangers simply have to make a move as he could be one of the most inspired additions that Gerrard could make.

The former Manchester United man can play almost anywhere in attacking areas – even up front – but can be particularly lethal when deployed in a central attacking midfielder role.

He should arguably find himself right at the very top of Gerrard’s shopping list this summer. And if Rangers manage to get him, his partnership with Morelos could be something that Celtic or any of their other rivals have absolutely no answer for next season.
