Fabio Cardoso spent a year at Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers.
Rangers fans could be forgiven if they had forgotten all about Fabio Cardoso.
The Portuguese centre-back has only been gone a little over a year, but it feels like a lot longer by virtue of how far the Gers have come under Steven Gerrard.
The Rangers manager terminated Cardoso’s contract in July of 2018 and returned to his homeland to join Santa Clara.
And to be fair, it’s been a successful move for the 25-year-old defender, who had a solid first season, but now he’s making headlines for the wrong reasons.
Cardoso, who spent just one year at Rangers, is being slammed after his tackle resulted in wonderkid Romario Baro suffering a suspected broken leg during a fiery clash with Porto this week.
The former Ibrox man was later involved in a tunnel bust-up between opposition players [The Scottish Sun] and Francisco Marqueson, Porto’s Director of Communications, has said that Cardoso epitomised the ‘extreme aggressiveness’ of Santa Clara’s style.
He said via The Scottish Sun: “The tackle by Fabio Cardoso was very serious.It was typical of the extreme aggressiveness displayed by Santa Clara throughout the game and they were fortunate they were aided by the benevolence of the referee.”
Rangers haven’t looked back since dumping the Portuguese and Gerrard now has four quality centre-backs at his disposal.
Hypothetically, if Cardoso was still in Glasgow, he’d be nowhere near making the senior squad every week, let alone the first XI, which is testament to the idea that Gerrard made the right decision.
