Eduardo Herrera cost Scottish Premiership challengers Rangers £1.5m in 2017 – but Pedro Caixinha’s flop has never played under Steven Gerrard.

It wasn’t a bad weekend for Rangers’ loan legion.

Jak Alnwick was superb between the sticks for Blackpool, Jordan Rossiter helped Fleetwood Town move into the play-off places and even Eduardo Herrera had something to celebrate.

The forgotten striker stepped off the bench to help Necaxa beat Atlas 2-0 away from home on Saturday, a result that lifts The Lightning top of the Liga MX table. Necaxa are now a point clear of Queretaro and Santos Laguna with a first league title since 1998 within their sights.

But that is not to say that Herrera is inspiring his side to glory with a glut of goals. The former Mexico international played just three minutes against Atlas and the fact remains that only one of his 10 league appearances have come from the start – and that came all the way back in July.

In total, Herrera has scored just twice in 12 games in all competitions and his short-term future is more uncertain than ever.

A forward who joined Rangers for £1.5 million during Pedro Caixinha’s ill-fated reign, as reported by the Daily Record, remains a Rangers player in name only though it remains to be seen where he ends up when his contract expires at the end of this season.

If Herrera wants to breathe fresh life into a stalling career and perhaps seal a permanent move to Necaxa, things need to change and fast.
