Rangers had a deadline day bid for England under-20 defender James Hill rejected, according to a report, as two Premier League sides also tried to lure Hill away from Fleetwood Town.
According to the Daily Record, Rangers, Burnley and Southampton all had bids thrown out by the League One side, with owner Andy Pilley only confirming bids were rejected.
Hill made his debut for England under-20s earlier this week and has regularly been watched by Premier League sides but Pilley insisted the bids weren’t good enough for his side to consider selling.
With the defender out of contract this summer, Pilley confessed Hill could move on in January but the Fleetwood owner is “relaxed” about his future.
“There were two Premier League clubs who made bids for James and there was also a bid from the Scottish Premiership,” Pilley said.
“I wouldn’t like to say who the clubs were, but unfortunately the bids weren’t of sufficient numbers for us to trade in.
We’re quite relaxed about his situation. It might be that he goes in January, but he’s going to go at the end of the season unless he signs a new contract.”
Hill has also had stints with Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool, and any move to Rangers would likely see him join the B team initially.
With plenty of defensive options at Ibrox, Hill is very much a long-term signing for clubs like Rangers and it will be interesting to see if they go back in for him in January.
