Glasgow Rangers have made some astute signings during the January transfer window in years gone by.

Here in HITC Sport’s first part looking at some of the most memorable signings that Rangers have made in terms of January transfers, we look at arguably their five best acquisitions from the winter window.

5. Ugo Ehiogu

It is perhaps a slightly controversial inclusion seeing as Ugo Ehiogu only played nine times for the Gers in the Scottish Premiership. However, he earned a spot in Rangers folklore with the winning goal in an Old Firm game in 2007. The fact that it was an overhead kick made the strike all the sweeter.

The boyhood Rangers fan initially joined the club on loan before making the switch permanent just a few months later. His consistency during his time with the club, and subsequently at Southampton, arguably confirms his departure to be the biggest player loss following the side’s demotion.

3. Barry Ferguson

Barry Ferguson took little time to re-establish himself as a key man for Rangers following his return to the club in January 2005. Although life was not always plain sailing, he managed to prove exactly why the club should not have sold him in the first place.

David Weir

When David Weir arrived at Ibrox at the age of 36, few would imagined that he would remain a key member of the squad for another five years and would go on to make 162 league appearances for the Gers. The current Light Blues assistant boss won eight major honours during his time with the club.

Kris Boyd

Given that Kris Boyd cost Rangers just £500,000 (via BBC Sport), he should arguably go down as one of the biggest bargains in January window history. He scored 101 times in just 143 top flight games during his first spell. Though his second stint did not capture the imagination in the same way, there is no doubt that he did enough during his initial period with the Gers to be widely respected by the Ibrox faithful.
