Rangers legend Barry Ferguson believes that going unbeaten this season will put Steven Gerrard’s side “up there” beside any of the great Ibrox teams of the past – and Ferguson is confident the Light Blues will finish the job tomorrow when they take on Aberdeen in their final game of the season.
Ferguson has been there and done it all as a Rangers player and knows just how difficult it is to achieve what Gerrard’s side sit on the brink of, and confessed it can only have been made harder by the pressure of Celtic going for a tenth consecutive title.
The Light Blues have only gone unbeaten once before in the top flight, winning all 18 of their games in 1898/99, and ending the season as invincibles would be an incredible end to a remarkable campaign for Rangers.
Aftre watching them cruise past Livingston in midweek, Ferguson is adamant the Gers have the bit between their teeth to achieve their final aims for the season – two months after winning the title for the first time in a decade.
“Believe me, it’s not easy to maintain standards when the title has been won for two months, Ferguson told the Daily Record. “And while there was disappointment in the Scottish Cup, maintaining an unbeaten league run is
something to be proud of.
“That’s why I don’t think there’s any doubt Rangers will go out and finish the job. Their mindset will be to run over the top of Aberdeen and put themselves into the history books as invincibles.
“It would be an incredible achievement. I’ve played in great Rangers league-winning teams but never did we go through an entire campaign without a defeat.
“A win over Aberdeen puts Steven Gerrard’s team up there with any Rangers team of the past, in my opinion. They’ll hit the 100-point barrier with a draw but forget that. They’ll be aiming for 102 points and a 26th clean sheet of the season.
“The most impressive thing is it has been done under the most severe pressure in this of all seasons. Let’s face it, the league had to be won this term and not only because of the 10 In A Row significance for Celtic. Was stopping that important? You bet your life it was.”
