Rangers defender Niko Katic has praised the Light Blues for the support he was given as he tried to fight back to fitness from a serious knee injury – telling how he will “always be grateful” for the steps Rangers took to help him.

Katic was injured in pre-season last summer, missing the entire campaign as Steven Gerrard‘s side romped to the club’s first Premiership title in a decade.

If being on the sidelines for that wasn’t bad enough, Katic had to do it all in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic which saw heavy restrictions on travel between countries.

The Croatian praised the way players and staff rallied around him as he faced “really, really tough times” before fighting back to return for pre-season ahead of the new campaign.

“They were great, I will always be grateful,” Katic told Rangers TV.

“From the staff, the medical staff, my teammates, everyone was really good with me.

“They all knew I was facing really, really tough times. The club always tried to find a way to help keep me, to keep me in a positive mind and connect me with my family.

“We all know it was really difficult to travel and they did the best to try to keep me happy so I’ll always be grateful for that.”

Katic’s short-term future might be away from Rangers

Having spent a year out, Katic is in dire need of regular football in the coming months.

With Rangers having no shortage of options at centre-back, a loan move where he can go and play regularly might be the best option in the short-term for Katic.
