Steven Gerrard had a big decision to make on the left side of his Rangers defence ahead of Thursday night’s clash against Villarreal – and Ibrox supporters want Andy Halliday to start.

Borna Barisic is yet to play as he continues his fight back from injury, while Jon Flanagan has featured on the left side of defence for much of the 2018-19 campaign since reuniting with Gerrard at Ibrox.

However, Halliday has gone from being a bit-part player last season to proving instrumental under Gerrard, mainly due to his versatility. He is able to play in central midfield, holding midfield and indeed, on the left side of defence.

Indeed, the 27-year-old did just that against Livingston on the weekend, and has started Rangers’ last five Scottish Premiership outings – playing left-back in four of those matches.

Barisic is now said to be available and is in the squad for Thursday’s match but did not make the squad for the Livingston clash, while one-time England international Flanagan came on for Halliday on Saturday in the 77th minute.

Rangers fans were asked who they want to see play at left-back in what is likely to be a back four, and the majority reckon Halliday will be used once again by Gerrard – in what would be his 19th appearance of the season in all competitions.
