Championship side Norwich City will let Russell Martin leave in January and a move to Ibrox with Scottish Premiership giants Rangers reportedly beckons.
Reports that Russell Martin could be heading to Rangers in January came straight out of the blue.
According to the Daily Record, the Scotland international has no future at Norwich City after being omitted from Daniel Farke’s side since the end of August. It is understood that Rangers will offer Martin an escape route and the centre-back will only be too happy to take it.
Now, Martin on paper looks a solid addition. He has 29 caps for Scotland and has spent seven largely successful years at Carrow Road, even enjoying four seasons in the Premier League.
And the long-standing skipper has the experience and leadership qualities that could make him a real asset both on and off the pitch to Graeme Murty’s side. His addition would also allow Bruno Alves, the veteran Portuguese who has done little to suggest he wants to remain at Ibrox beyond January, to take his expensive wage demands elsewhere in the New Year.
But despite all the potential positives of a deal, which is expected to be a short-term loan for the time being, it seems that Rangers fans aren’t too convinced.
A temporary move for a 31-year-old whose best days are behind him is not exactly the sort of signing that would get supporters off their seats for sure. But surely Martin still has plenty to offer?
