The Glasgow Rangers academy left-back has temporarily left Ibrox and joined Dumbarton on loan.

Matthew Shiels of Scotland controls the ball during the Under 19 Euro Qualifier between Germany and Scotland on March 21, 2018 in Lippstadt, Germany.

A number of Glasgow Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to wish Ibrox academy ace Matthew Shiels the best following his loan move to Dumbarton, as confirmed by the official Gers account.

The 18-year-old left-back impressed for the Light Blues’ development sides last season and now has an opportunity to gain valuable senior experience at the Scottish League One club, the stint set to last until January.

Shiels, who according to Transfermarkt is contracted to Rangers until the summer of 2021, leaves Ibrox on loan for the second time in his career, having spent time with Edinburgh City during the 2017-18 campaign.

As reported by the official Dumbarton website, the teenage full-back – capped 10 times for Scotland Under-19s – is set to be available for Tuesday night’s second Scottish League Cup sectional match, away to Morton, and will wear number seven.

Here is what some Bears said on the social media platform following the announcement, as well as Shiels’ tweet, regarding the player’s temporary switch away from Ibrox:

Dumbarton’s last season was their first in in the third tier of Scottish football for six years, having finished ninth and lost the playoffs in 2017-18, and having finished sixth in the table last term, they will be hoping to kick on and return to the Scottish Championship come next summer.
