Rangers are hoping to lure Rennes defender Mexer to Ibrox.
Rangers’ season isn’t even over yet, with two more games still to go including an Old Firm derby with Celtic, but they’re already busy in the transfer market.
The Gers have already snapped up two wings on pre-contract agreements in Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie, whilst Steven Davis has made his move permanent.
Greg Stewart could soon follow, and another bargain deal is being targeted in the form of Rennes defender Mexer, with Rangers looking to do smart business with free agents.
L’Equipe claimed last week that Steven Gerrard was spotted in Rennes dining with the centre back in an attempt to get him to join Rangers ahead of his contract expiring at the end of next month.
Mexer, 30, has been a regular for Rennes since joining from Nacional in 2014, whilst he’s also racked up 46 caps for Mozambique on the international stage.
A strong centre back with great aerial ability, Mexer has bags of experience, which should be welcome in the Rangers defence with Gareth McAuley leaving this summer.
The links have only grown stronger over the last 24 hours, as O Pais in Mexer’s native Mozambique have published a photo of Gerrard and Mexer together in France. There’s a slim chance that this one is photoshopped, but it looks like a very strong photo of the pair posing together.
Rangers fans now feel that a deal for Mexer must be done, as there would be little reason to take a photo with Gerrard otherwise, with supporters already welcoming him to Ibrox as they feel the photo is a give away that he’s arriving in Glasgow.
