Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has hinted that his side are closing in on another central defender.

Glasgow Rangers fans think that Gary Cahill might be the eighth summer signing that Steven Gerrard has alluded to.

Gerrard told the Glasgow Evening Times last night that Rangers were close to signing a centre-back, although it wasn’t who everyone was expecting.

Rangers have been heavily linked with Simon Deli in recent times, but Gerrard’s comments seem to suggest that it won’t be the Ivorian that arrives at Ibrox.

“There is something imminent in that position, but it is not the guy that you are talking about,” he said.

The comments have got Rangers fans thinking about how Gerrard could possibly mean.

And there is a big section of the Rangers crowd who think that Cahill could be the defender to arrive in the near future.

Cahill is a free agent following his release from Chelsea in the summer, and he has played with Gerrard before at international level.

The issue for Rangers with signing Cahill would be his wages, as he was in a big contract at Chelsea.

If Cahill was to arrive at Rangers it would be a statement signing, and he would surely complete their central defensive line-up for upcoming campaign.
