Barnes’ poor spell with Celtic back in 1999 is still regarded today as one of the worst high profile managerial stints of all time.

He was asked by SkySports to weigh in on Gerrard taking the Rangers job, and from one former Liverpool star to another, he warned him just how tough it will be.
Barnes said: “If he wants to manage, it’s going in at the deep end, and probably at a time when Rangers obviously aren’t their strongest.
“Financially they are a long way away, which means they are not going to be able to get the players in the next year or two to necessarily challenge Celtic at this point.”

Barnes did add that the move ‘could be good’ for Gerrard if he takes Gary McAllister with him as assistant and is realistic about just how tough the task will be.
The former England winger presented a fairly balanced view of the situation but Rangers fans did not appreciate where the words were coming from.
As Celtic boss Barnes lost eight of 29 matches and was quickly dismissed in favour of Martin O’Neill. His managerial career never recovered.
