Rangers couldn’t lure Oliver McBurnie to Ibrox on transfer deadline day.

Rangers secured one new signing on deadline day, bringing in Norwich City youngster Glenn Middleton to boost their youth ranks, but fans were hoping for one more addition.

After starting January with the permanent signing of loan star Declan John, Rangers moved on to bringing in new faces, with manager Graeme Murty enjoying a productive month.

Russell Martin, Sean Goss, Greg Docherty, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings all arrived at Ibrox, strengthening Murty’s options for the second half of the campaign and beyond in Docherty’s case.

Rangers didn’t suffer any major departures either, despite late speculation over Alfredo Morelos’ future, though Rangers aren’t quite out of the woods there just yet.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Morelos has been the subject of interest from Chinese side Beijing Renhe, and whilst Rangers are standing firm, they won’t be completely safe until the Chinese transfer window shuts at the end of next month.

As a result, The Scottish Sun reported on deadline day that Rangers had lined up a move for Swansea City striker Oliver McBurnie, in the hope of luring the boyhood Gers fan to Ibrox.

However, Barnsley won the race to sign the 21-year-old Scot, leaving Rangers fans to wonder what might have been had they managed to secure his signature on the final day of the transfer window.

McBurnie took to Twitter on Wednesday night to send a message to Barnsley fans about his arrival, but a host of Rangers fans responded by urging him to make the move to Ibrox in the future.

Fans suggested that McBurnie will one day make his move to his boyhood club, and were questioning just why he moved to Barnsley rather than head to Rangers – though it’s unclear just how strong any Rangers interest was amid questions over Morelos.
