James Tavernier commented on Twitter after captaining Rangers in their 6-1 Scottish Cup win over Ayr on Sunday, and the message prompted a raft of replies from Rangers fans desperate to see the defender sign a new contract at Ibrox.

Tavernier’s current deal with the Gers expires at the end of next season, meaning that there is likely to be a sense of uncertainty surrounding his future until he has put pen to paper or has moved on.

In comments reported by The Scottish Sun over the weekend, Graeme Murty suggested that talks had been held with the 26-year-old regarding a new contract with Rangers, so Gers fans will certainly be hoping that that soon develops into good news.

Meanwhile, Tavernier looked to put any questions regarding his future to the back of his mind as he wore the captain’s armband for the side’s cup tie with the League One high-flyers. And it proved to be a successful outing for the Scottish Premiership side.

Rangers came from behind to win in emphatic fashion, with Tavernier one of a number of players to impress in the win, regularly causing problems down the right-hand side and performing well defensively.

And after the game, the defender took to social media to express his pride at being given the captaincy for the day and the overall result which has set up a quarter-final clash with Falkirk.

While Tavernier was keen to comment on the game, the Rangers fans would have left him in absolutely no doubt what is at the forefront of their minds.

Some messages concerned his performances and the fact that he captained the team, but the majority of the supporters who responded simply wanted to make it clear that they desperately want him to sign that new contract.
