Former Glasgow Rangers defender David Bates received plenty of praise from the Ibrox faithful after his display.

A number of Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to laud David Bates’ display after the defender marked his international debut by helping Scotland keep a clean sheet on their way to an emphatic win at the weekend.

Bates has enjoyed a rapid rise through the international ranks. He only made his under-21 debut in September having never previously been involved with the set-up in the earlier age groups.

But off the back of some superb form with Hamburg, Bates was handed a senior call-up by Alex McLeish and was given the chance to make his debut against Albania on Saturday.

And it will prove to be a game that the 22-year-old will remember fondly as Scotland kept their hopes of promotion out of their Nations League group alive with an emphatic 4-0 win.

Bates’ performance was another reminder for Rangers fans that losing him in the summer was a major blow. The Gers’ defence have generally looked much better this term than they did last season, but Bates was unquestionably a shining light during his time in the Ibrox first-team.

So when he took to social media to express his delight at winning his first cap, the centre-back’s tweet prompted a number of Gers supporters to reply with praise for his performance in Shkoder, while others highlighted their disappointment that he is no longer with the Scottish Premiership heavyweights.
