The 53-year-old’s St Johnstone side battled hard against Rangers on Wednesday.

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright

Tommy Wright didn’t exactly do himself any favours. Just days before his St Johnstone side were due to face Rangers in a crucial fifth versus third clash at Ibrox, the 53-year-old admitted to the Scottish Sun that he would consider taking the reigns at Ibrox if handed the opportunity.

As such, Wednesday’s fixture took on added importance, the ramifications for the league table often overshadowed by the idea that this was the Northern Irishman’s audition for one of the most challenging, high-profile jobs in British football.

And, on the face of it, Wright’s St Johnstone side did their manager proud for the most part. Turning around a two goal deficit in the space of 15 second half minutes after Rangers’ Rob Kiernan was left stunned by a harsh straight red, the visitors looked set for a hard earned point until Emerson Hyndman drilled home a 91st minute winner.

Yet, despite their character and never-say-die attitude, something that Rangers perhaps lacked in the final, dark days of Mark Warburton’s tenure, Rangers fans are not exactly smitten with the idea of Wright sitting in the other Ibrox dugout in the months ahead.

He may not be the most instantly inspiring candidate but, in the views of many supporters, the defeat proves beyond all doubt that he is not the man for the job.
