Rangers prospect Ross McCrorie could be used as a right-back on loan at Portsmouth, The Scottish Sun report.

Manager Kenny Jackett feels he has the attributes to shine in the position after being deployed there off the bench against Sunderland in English League One action at the weekend.

The midfielder lost his place in the side initially after picking up a red card in the club’s league opener against Shrewsbury Town.

The Pompey boss was left impressed by his recent impact though.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “I wouldn’t be averse to using him at right-back again.

“It will be interesting to see how he develops.

“There’s no reason why I wouldn’t. He’s got the attributes and the athleticism to do it. And he has the confidence to do it, whether it’s a new position or not.”

Portsmouth may be using him as injury cover, but it sounds like Jackett is more than happy to use him there if he deems it necessary.

The news may be alarming for those at Rangers hoping to see him develop and get regular games as a central midfielder this season.

McCrorie badly needs the kind of loan that Greg Docherty enjoyed last term in an effort to prove to Steven Gerrard he has a future in the middle of the park at Ibrox.

It’s fair to say that Jackett’s comments haven’t gone down too well with some Rangers fans.
