Glasgow Rangers boss Graeme Murty’s contract expires in the summer, so could Robbie Neilson head to Ibrox?

Rangers fans have been reacting on Twitter to comments that Robbie Neilson made to BBC Sportsound where he refused to rule himself out of the running to succeed Graeme Murty at Ibrox.

Murty’s contract with the Gers expires in the summer. And while he did an excellent job of picking up the pieces in the wake of both Mark Warburton’s and Pedro Caixinha’s departures, it is becoming more and more difficult to find a Rangers fan who is in favour of the former Scotland international keeping the job beyond this season.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty looks on from the touch line during the Scottish Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on April 15, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Gers face a battle to hold onto second in the Scottish Premiership and were dispatched by Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final just a few weeks after many were suggesting that the gap was closing.

It appears unlikely that Murty will remain in his current job, but could Neilson be the man to succeed him? Bet Victor lists the former Hearts boss as a 16/1 outsider for the post. And when asked about the job, the 37-year-old certainly did not suggest that he would not be interested.

“I think first and foremost there will be a lot of names on that list,” said Neilson. “But the big thing I think is, what are the future plans for the club? That’s what every manager that’s going to be interested in that job is going to ask. What’s the strategy, what are we going to do? What are the plans for the next few years, what’s the budget going to be?”

“I think that’s the biggest issue. That has to get sorted out. What’s the set up? You know, the director of football, the CEO, how are they going to do it? I think that has to come out first,” he added.

While Neilson may be keeping his cards close to his chest, it appears that a number of Gers supporters are concerned that he could be in contention as they certainly do not want him to arrive.

He did an excellent job with Hearts, but could not replicate that success at MK Dons and was sacked in January. Although there are some fans who would seemingly be pleased with Neilson getting the job, the general consensus appears to be that it would be an underwhelming choice from the Gers board.

Here is the best of the reaction…
