Some Glasgow Rangers supporters feel the Ibrox side would be top of the Scottish Premiership were it not for some refereeing decisions going against them.

Video assistant referee technology could be a step closer to being introduced to Scottish football following a summit meeting of the country’s top-flight managers and referees hosted by the Scottish Football Association in Perth.

On Thursday evening at McDiarmid Park, 10 Scottish Premiership club managers – Kilmarnock’s Steve Clarke and Hamilton’s Martin Canning were absent – liaised with top-level referees in a meeting organised by SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell.

Match officials Andrew Dallas, Kevin Clancy and John Beaton were present at the summit alongside SFA compliance officer Clare Whyte and referees chief John Fleming, according to the Daily Mail.

Maxwell is quoted by BBC Sport as saying there was now “a real appetite to investigate VAR”, while Hibernian head coach Neil Lennon, who emerged as the managers’ spokesman, said the meeting was “very productive”.

Ian Maxwell is unveiled as the new Scottish FA Chief Executive at Hampden Park on May 22, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

As well as VAR, the possibility of appointing full-time referees and the SFA’s new disciplinary procedures were also discussed, although Lennon suggested that Whyte, who is in her first season in charge, had been “very impressive”.

After the news became public, some Rangers fans praised the development, as there is sentiment among the Ibrox faithful that a number of key decisions have gone against them this season which would have otherwise seen them top the table.
