According to The Scotsman, Rangers are closing in on a £3.8million deal to sign Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu.
It’s claimed that talks are still ongoing between Rangers and Amiens, but a deal is now thought to be very close.
Amiens are prepared to sell for around €4million (£3.8million) given that he inside the final year of his contract, and Rangers are prepared to give him a long-term deal.
Zungu, 27, has suffered relegation with Amiens, and seemingly wants to move on after a January switch to Mallorca fell through.
The South African international has previously turned out for Mamelodi Sundowns and Vitoria Guimaraes, and could now make the move to Scotland – becoming the first South African to play for Rangers since Dean Furman in 2008.
Zungu is primarily a defensive midfielder, and it’s reasonable to think that he could form a midfield base with Ryan Jack whilst allowing Ianis Hagi to play centrally in a 4-2-3-1.

Zungu is strong in the tackle and protects his back four well, but also uses the ball well with a fine passing range.
However, some Rangers fans seem worried. Zungu’s injury record isn’t great, and supporters are ‘slightly worried’ that Rangers are paying big money for an injury-prone player with little resale value.
Some think the money is ‘ridiculous’ given that he is in the final year of his contract, believing the deal to be a massive gamble when other midfielders are already at the club.
Others do think Zungu is ‘brilliant’ and ‘the type of midfielder Rangers need’, but many need some convincing on this deal.
