Joey Barton lasted a matter of months at Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers.

Joey Barton spoken about his ill-fated Rangers career.

The 34-year-old midfielder saw the rest of his two-year contract with the Scottish Premiership side terminated a month ago, having only joined them in the summer.

The decision stemmed from a training-ground row that Barton had with team-mate Andy Halliday and manager Mark Warburton a number of days after their 5-1 defeat away to Old Firm rivals Celtic, in which he was initially suspended.

Nevertheless, Barton completely stands by his decision to join Rangers in the first place, stressing that it was an opportunity that he couldn’t pass it up – and he’d do it again.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live last night: Signing for Rangers was an opportunity I couldn’t let pass. I would do it again, it’s a great football club.

“The only regret I’ve got is not playing football now. No player wants to miss football when they are fit, especially not when you’re 34 and have haven’t got another 10 years left to play.”

The interview, and his comments, prompted a mixed reception from Rangers fans. Some stuck the boot in over his failure to make it at Ibrox, while others were more sympathetic.

Rangers' Joey Barton before the match

Barton did himself no favours. From the moment he signed, the former Burnley and Newcastle United ace put a big bit of pressure on himself by claiming that he was in a different league to Celtic’s Scott Brown and it was more or less downhill from there.

He does not yet have a club, though he is expected to return to the Championship. He should not have a hard time finding employement despite his outspoken and unpredictable nature, given how key he was in helping the Clarets to Premier League promotion last term.
